Reuters —A 30-year-old man killed 12 relatives, including his father and brother in Iran, official media reported on Saturday, in a rare mass shooting in the country. They said the man, who was not identified, used a Kalashnikov assault rifle and was later shot and killed by security forces in the south-central province of Kerman. They said the cause of the shooting, in a remote rural village, was a family dispute. Mass killings are rare in Iran, where hunting rifles are the only weapons people are allowed to possess. Two years ago, a dismissed employee of a state institution in western Iran shot and killed three people and injured five before killing himself.

CNN —A 65-year-old Israeli woman who was kidnapped by Hamas militants on October 7 has been found dead near Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital, the Israeli military said Thursday. The body of Yehudit Weiss, a resident of kibbutz Be’eri, was found by Israeli soldiers in Gaza City and brought back to Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement. The IDF said her body had been recovered from what it called a “structure” near to the Al-Shifa hospital, where the IDF on Wednesday launched what it called a “precise and targeted” operation against Hamas, which it says has been using the hospital for military purposes. Hamas and hospital officials have consistently rejected Israel’s claims that Hamas has built a command center under the hospital. I wrote that some members of my team had been tallying the number of soldiers killed and discussing whether this operation was worth the losses. Russia is teaching students the ways of war so that it can conscript more ready young men, UK intel said. The senior student curriculum includes handling rifles, grenades, and drones. The basic military training module of the class includes handling Kalashnikov assault rifles — something seen in occupied Crimean schools last spring — as well as grenades. Now, it appears both could be goals, as the class both indoctrinates students into war efforts and prepares them for potential fighting. Similarly, Russia training students in how to pilot drones could give them a leg up in recruiting new operators, considering the highly specialized and meticulously trained skillset required for flying drones, particularly first-person view (FPV) drones, and the important — and dangerous — role these operators play on the battlefield.

This is how Komsomolskaya School Number 1 is marking the opening of a new school desk, a so-called “hero desk” emblazoned with the face and biography of one of Russia’s war dead, once a pupil at this very school.
